Guide Dogs for the Blind

As part of our Living and Learning like a Champion learning and the theme 'Equality', we had a visit from a visually impaired person Ian and his guide dog, Sutton.  The assembly was scheduled to take 25 minutes but lasted 70 minutes because everyone was so interested and the children asked some very perceptive questions about what it was like to be blind and so on.  We all learnt a lot - even the staff!  Sutton knows the word Nationwide when Ian wants him to take him to the building society!  Ian has a braille watch which helps him to tell the time.  Sutton retires at the end of the year and Ian will get his new dog, this time he wants a German Shepherd as he has had 3 labradors and retrievers.  Ian will be very sad when Sutton retires but Ian's brother is going to look after him so he will still see him.  Oscar Hewitt gave the Y6 thanks to the visitors.

Ian, Sutton and Ian's helper giving the talk - everyone was very well behaved!

We all had chance to stroke and pet Sutton!

Year 6 girls couldn't resist Sutton!

Finally, did you know that the school sponsor's a Guide Dog for the Blind?  We have a section about this on our school council noticeboard and the Guide Dog Calendar is never on the correct month - it's always on the favourite picture of the person who changes it!
